Goodluck Iyke Endorse EVAN OGBONNA as Absu SUG president

Goodluck Iyke endorses Evan ogbonna as SUG president

I support Evan ogbonna because to the best of my knowledge is that his administration will create a special committee that'll preserve and protect our students most especially female students from intimidation that comes from any angle. Not only this, his leadership will be better than those that have led the students from time immemorial.

I therefore call upon every student schooling in ABSU to
Vote Comrade Evans Ogbonna for SUG president.

Gov Ajimobi, three others charged to court

An Oyo State High Court in the Oyo Judicial Division, on Thursday, adjourned till May 14 a case of contempt filed against the Governor Abiola Ajimobi and three others.
The ruling was delivered at Court 1, presided over by Justice Iyabo Yerima on Thursday, The Nation reports.
The subject of the litigation bothers on the revocation of contract awarded Rahvet International Limited by the Oyo state government for the construction of a 10,000 metric tonne 4 bin silos projects situated at Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town.
The projects currently stand at about 85 per cent completed.
In a case with suit number HOY/06/2019 between Rahvet International Limited (the claimant/applicant) and Governor of Oyo State, the Oyo State government, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development and state Attorney General as the first, second, third and fourth defendants/respondents respectively, the claimant (Rahvet Int’l Ltd) had filed an application by way of Motion Exparte for two interim injunctions from the court and which were granted.
The court in a ruling dated April 9 in granting the claimant’s motion had in the ruling restrained both the claimant and the defendants from gaining access to the project site or do any kind of work on the site pending the determination of the legality of the contract termination by the government.
The motion ex-parte as sort by the claimant and granted by the court was “interim injunction restraining the defendants by themselves, their assign, officials, commissioners, permanent secretaries, agents, servants, privies or otherwise howsoever from forcefully taking over and breaking into the project site of the 10,000 metric tonnes 4 bin silos project situated at Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town pending the determination of the interlocutory application.
“Interim injunction restraining the defendants by themselves, their assign, officials, commissioners, permanent secretaries, agents, servants, privies or otherwise howsoever from tampering with or in any way dealing with any or all of the equipment stored by the Applicant within the premises of the project site of the 10,000 metric tonnes 4 bin silos project situated at Oyo-Awe Road, by Awe junction, Oyo town or in any way attempting to install the equipment without the active and direct participation and main involvement of the Claimant and its Technical partners, that is, the Chinese equipment manufacturers, China National Heavy Machine Corporation (CHMC) pending the determination of the interlocutory application.”
During proceedings, counsel to the claimants, Mr Bode Elemide told the court that he was surprised that the defendants could “deliberately, callously, maliciously and flagrantly flout the order of the Court”, just a day after the judgement by breaking into the project site and replacing the padlock with.
He further told the court the names of some prominent personalities and top government functionaries who were part of the team that ‘invaded’ the project site to perform certain fetish ceremonies, adding that filing the contempt proceeding was in accordance with Order 42 Rules 9 and 10 of the Oyo State High Court (Civil Procedures) Rules, 2010.
Responding, Counsel to all the defendants, Mr. Nojeem Abiola, a Deputy Director with the state ministry of justice denied knowledge of the incident and that he was not informed or carried along by the defendants, noting that he could not also ascertain the true position of the claimants on the invasion and disobedience of the court order before the Thursday court session.
Before giving the ruling, Justice Yerima noted that the court does not pry its eyes into the affairs of the other arms of government, wondering why any arms of government should disobey a court order.
She also expressed shock that the Counsel to the defendants could stand to defend the defendants when he should actually defend the integrity of the profession by encouraging that the court order be adhered to.
She later ruled that the case be adjourned to May 14 for hearing on why the defendants should not be committed to prison for flouting the April 9th court order.

Rivers killing: CP Belel absolves policemen, denies reports

The Rivers State Police Command has said it foiled an attempt by some errant youths to burn down a Divisional Police Station in Elimgbu, Obio-Akpor Local government area of the state.
State Commissioner of Police, Usman Belel, in a statement obtained by DAILY POST, said but for the quick intervention of the command, the station would have been razed by the youths.
Youths of Atali community in Obio-Akpor had gone on rampage following the alleged killing of a young man by a Police officer from Elimgbu Police Station who stabbed the man that later died in the hospital.
A stray bullet from the Police also reportedly hit two other people during a protest by the youths of Atali community, leading to a mass protest and unrest.
But the Commissioner of Police in Rivers state, CP Belel denied the reports and exonerated the Police officer, saying the deceased man was not stabbed deliberately.
According tot him, “The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn by report making the rounds on social and other conventional media on the alleged stabbing to death of a civilian from Atali Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
“The said report is and does not represent the true situation of what happened on 18th April, 2019, hence it has become necessary to put the records straight and state as follows:
“On 18th April, 2019 at about 2000hrs, youths numbering about one hundred (100) from Atali Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, broke and fell the parameter fence at the back of the Elimgbu Police Station, where they set ablaze an apartment belonging to Sergeant Isreal Sunday and destroyed all his household property value yet to be ascertained.
“The youths who did not stop at that, further went to launch attack on the Elimgbu Police Station with a view to burning down the Police Station but were stopped by the Police re-enforcements deployed to the scene.
“The matter that gave rise to this incident is that, men of the IGP Monitoring Unit investigating a case of kidnapping, with the aid of technical intelligence, tracked the identified suspects to Atali Community. The team booked at Elimgbu Police Station and went with two (2) personnel from the Elimgbu Police for assistance.
“On arrival, the team identified their targets and immediately arrested them. While they were taking them to Elimgbu Police Station, the suspects raised alarm and started chanting cult slogans which attracted members of their gang and youths of the community who immediately swooped on the Police, attacked, overpowered and rescued the two suspects who were in handcuffs. In the scuffle that ensued, a Police Sergeant was seriously assaulted and knife cut injuries inflicted on him which led to the rescue of the arrested suspects.
“Seeing that they have been overpowered, the Police beat a fast retreat and went for re-enforcement. Consequently, when the rampaging cultists/youths sighted the Police re-enforcement, they mobilized again in their numbers and one of them who was with a knife attacked ASP Chukwuma Onuora with the knife, and as he was to stab him, he defended himself and while they were struggling with the knife, the boy had a cut on his stomach. The same youths took him to the hospital where he later died.
“Surprisingly, without going to report this development to the Police, the same youths mobilized and launched the aforementioned attack on the Police barracks and would have set the Division ablaze but for our timely intervention.
“Let me at this stage appeal for calm as the situation has been brought under control. I have ordered a thorough investigation into the matter with a view to bringing any person or group found complicit to book.
“I want to reiterate my irrevocable commitment to fighting crime and criminality in the state and dealing with all criminal elements, while doing this I want to strongly maintain that the Command under my watch will not condone or shield any of our personnel who engages in unprofessional conduct capable of undermining the integrity of the Force. I will not also fold my arms and see the lives of my personnel and property of the Force suffer threat of any kind, as any such attempt will be resisted in accordance with the law.
“Once again, let me on behalf of the Command sympathize with the family of the deceased and the policemen who have suffered different loses. I want to appeal for calm as I have made deployments to the place to guard against further breach of the peace.”

Eight Nigerians sentenced to death in UAE for robbery

The Criminal Court of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates has sentenced eight Nigerians to death for carrying out what it termed as “a string of armed robberies” at money exchanges and cash machines across the emirate in December 2016.
Khaleej Times, a UAE medium, reported on Thursday that the ninth suspect was however sentenced to six months imprisonment for possession of stolen money.
He would be deported after serving the jail term.
The report noted that the ninth suspect denied the charge against him and claimed that one of the suspect’s brothers asked him to transfer Dh60,000 to an account in his home country (Nigeria).
The court accused the convicted persons of armed robbery, public assault and seizing money by force. Some of the accused were said to have confessed to their crimes while others denied the charges.
The UAE Police said they checked surveillance cameras and found fingerprints to identify the perpetrators, which led to their arrest.
One of the defendants was said to have returned part of the stolen money.
A total of Dh1.8m cash was reportedly stolen from three locations.
In the ruling, which took place on Wednesday, only eight persons were convicted out of the 20 persons arrested for the crime, which involved attacking security guards in four violent attacks at ATMs and money exchanges across Sharjah in late 2016.
According to a report by Gulf News, a daily English Newspaper in Dubai, the verdict was handed down by Judge Majid Al Muhairi of Sharjah Criminal Court.

Atiku vs Buhari: DSS speaks on ‘arresting’ INEC ICT staff over leaked presidential election results

The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied that it arrested and detained seven members of staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Mr Peter Afunanya, Public Relations Officer of the service, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja, NAN reports.
A social media report had alleged that the DSS arrested some ICT staff of INEC for disclosing the commission’s server identity number to the PDP and its presidential candidate in the just-concluded election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
He said that the report went further to state that the staff were detained and tortured for three days by the service to find out who among them gave out the information.
The DSS spokesman said that the report also said that they were hurriedly released by the service when their wives threatened to jointly go on public protest.
“The service wishes to state that the information in its entirety is false and should be seen as a calculated effort to smear its image.
“It states categorically that none of such things happened as it never invited or arrested any INEC staff.
“There is no iota of truth in these allegations and the public is, therefore, enjoined to disregard them. They are simply manipulative, misleading, inciting and can only be considered as mischievous and unpatriotic,” he said.
Afunanya recalled that the DSS was recently honoured by an International Election observer group for its neutrality and professionalism during the general elections.
He assured the public that the service would continue to conduct itself in the manner that had earned it honour.
Afunanya warned mischief makers who were desirous of using fake news to cause break down of law and order to desist from such.
“The service will not condone deliberate acts of subversion and sabotage aimed at harming the peace of the nation,” he said. The spokesman warned that those bent on causing disaffection would be brought to justice.
